West Yarmouth at a Glance
West Yarmouth, the southern area of the town of Yarmouth on Cape Cod, was known historically as
"South Seas" by its Native American inhabitants before European settlers
came to the area in 1643. With most of its new residents occupied as farmers
and fishermen, the area remained rural and undeveloped until the 1800s when
people from the cities began the trend that still exists today–to visit the
coastline and beaches of the Cape for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. West
Yarmouth was quickly developed beyond its small milling industry into a family-friendly
destination of summertime attractions and activities such as a 27-hole
golf course, a children’s
petting zoo, miniature golf, trampolines, fishing piers and island tours.
The community’s past, however, can still be viewed today through historic sites
such as Yarmouth’s only lighthouse, Point
Gammon Light on Great Island or the 1710 Baxter
Mill. Many visitors stay at the wealth of hotels,
resorts
and cottages
that are on offer and suit every budget and taste.
