Brewster, MA at a Glance
The peaceful town of Brewster is located bay side in Barnstable County on the
idyllic Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
The town boasts 325 acres (132 ha) of beach and marshlands and 24 ponds. Almost
10 percent of Brewster's area is comprised of water. As a result, the town has
implemented a conservation plan (1985) that has resulted in a third of the area
being retained for open space, recreation and watershed protection. Today, Brewster
celebrates award winning drinking water. First settled in 1656, Brewster was originally
part of the town of Harwich. Brewster was named after the first religious leader
of the Pilgrims at Plymouth
Colony, Elder William Brewster. The town was a popular residence for wealthy sea
captains, who built their luxurious estates by the beach. Exploring Brewster's
history is easy, at the New
England Fire and History Museum and the Cape
Cod Museum of Natural History. Both are committed to local history and display
antique artifacts. The Brewster
Store is a huge part of local history, open since 1866, with unique items
like original glass bottles of Coke and unusual gifts. The great outdoors play
an important role in Brewster life, with Nickerson
State Park providing a venue for camping, fishing, biking and water sports.
Brewster is home to an astounding number of art galleries. Some notable ones include
the Art
House Gallery and the Underground
Gallery. The Brewster
in Bloom Festival is a celebrated annual event. Every June, locals and tourists
flock to the decorated streets for the beautiful parade. Dances, contests and
kid's activities are also featured.
